Inspired to Inspire

Let me start by  saying, I don't normally talk about the charity work I do or support, because I usually subscribe to this school of thought: Matt 6:3-4 "But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing. 4 so that your giving may be in secret And your Father, who sees what is done in Secret, will reward you",  but this story I feel; needs to be told because It changed me, and so I Hope it inspires and changes you too.
My Friends and I Having a laugh with the girls

Background
For the longest time, my niece Evelyn Karungi of +Eve & Nico Business had been telling us about Warrior Women, (now GIRL EMED) A Charity organisation she had started. I had never really understood what exactly It did or was about, but I supported her anyway because I figured its charity, it must be for a good cause. I'm a Rotarian and in Rotary we believe in Service above self. So one day I invited Evelyn to come and give us a talk about her Warrior Women Organisation to see if our Rotary club would partner with her or sponsor her program, and to really understand what Warrior Women was about.
After her presentation I was greatly moved by these girls she talked about and I decided It was time to meet them.

The Journey
From the presentation I gathered that she was supporting girls who had been rescued from all kinds of atrocities ranging from defilement, rape, child molestation, and underage marriage. I asked two friends of mine if they wanted to support the cause and they agreed and we decided to go to Entebbe early Learning School to meet the girls. Evelyn gave us the details of items they might need and we bought them and went to visit the girls. Nothing could have prepared us for the welcome we received from these girls. They looked nothing like I had imagined. They looked happy, healthy and very warm. I almost didn't believe that these are the same girls that had supposedly been rescued
Look at their happy smiles

The Experience
After welcoming us, the girls and boys sang for us and danced for us. It was a lovely Presentation. As soon as the presentation was done we were invited to have lunch with them and this is when we got to really interact with them.  My emotions were not prepared for what happened next. We sat with the girls and they started to share with us their stories. One of the girls narrated her ordeal, of being continuously raped by her father from the age of 6 after the death of her mother. For about five years, she was being defiled by her own father until one night she couldn't take it any more. She ran away until she found someone to help take her to the police station. "I ran and the road wasn't ending" she recollects. I sat in silence, listening and having all kinds of emotions ranging from anger, rage, hate for her father's cruelty and having empathy for her and pitying her situation. Then she said to me, " But Now, I forgave him and I am Happy". I was speechless. And, if you know me you know that being speechless is rare for me if not a myth. I'm talkative and I always have something to say. But not that day. That day, in that moment I had nothing to say. I was speechless!!! Looking at her stunned wondering if she really understood what it meant to forgive, and be happy... Asking myself "how can you be happy? Why don't you want to kill your father? ??? No one would judge you if you did, we would all understand". She looked at me as if reading what was going on in my mind, and she said " I know it is hard  to believe, but I have found the love of God, and so I forgave my father and now I pray for him". In that moment, everything else stopped to matter. All my small worries, my petty woes, they all seized to matter. Here I was, with a girl who had been through the imaginable and yet she had managed to overcome, forgive and find a happy place. She really was happy, she had the brightest smile and she was quite cheeky cracking jokes and making merry with us. I gave her a hug and told her she had inspired me. I thought I had gone there to inspire them and give them hope, Little did I know, they would inspire me instead and transform me. My life hasn't been the same ever since. Something about that experience stayed with me and stays with me to this day. Nothing is unforgivable, and if a girl can overcome the ordeal of her father who is supposed to protect her but rapes her instead, there is nothing you can't overcome.
The girls and I

 The Lessons
  • You are not what you've been through, Smile through your adversity
  • No matter how difficult your situation seems, be optimistic. Nothing is permanent
  • You don't need material Things to be happy
  • If she can forgive the unspeakable, there is nothing you can't forgive
  • Love does indeed bear all things and forgives all things
  • No matter what you're going through, someone else where has been through worse,
  • Don't take things for granted, just because someone has less than you doesn't mean they're less happier than you. That girl was definitely happier than me that day with all that I have
  • Be grateful for the little you have, someone elsewhere is praying for it.
  • Love, give and be kind to people, you never know what they're going through
  • Stop being petty and stressing over the little things, its never that serious.

One of the letters the girls wrote to me

Gratitude
I'm grateful for people like Evelyn for helping these girls and supporting them, And for Daphne their Care taker, and for their "mummy" who has dedicated her land, resources to building a school for them and teaching them life skills so they feel like they have grown up in a home, For my friends Anisha and Mercedes who were so selfless as to give and give and give to these girls and pay school fees for some of them.
Lastly, thank you to the girls for the warm welcome, for letting us in and allowing to share their stories with us, for loving us and blessing us with their testimonies. My life will forever be changed because of you.

One Minute south...

Uganda has some hidden treasures and we can always count on The Peal Guide Uganda to help us discover and explore them. This Easter was no exception as we embarked on what was titled the "intimania" experience. We started our "intimania" discovery by taking a boat cruise on the calming waters of the beautiful lake Victoria as we headed south to a little intimate haven on the Island of Bulago called 'One Minute South'.

We were to turn this island into our own country for the weekend. Nothing can prepare you for the warm welcome you receive at the Island with such serene beauty. Just the perfect spot for you to relax and unwind. Also, perfect for couples who want to get away from the busy and noisy Kampala just to catch a breath of fresh air.

The view is absolutely to die for. We had the times of our lives, thanks to Kella Gram silent Disco. A special S/O to Deejay Jo and Dj Simples for allowing me to get all up in their set and for accommodating my demands for Queen Sheba  and Ykeebender songs... You guys rock.. Also, special thanks to my forever travel partner lauryn and our team no sleep (yes we stayed up all night dancing and living it up till the sun came down). Nothing was going to stop us from having fun, all other issues aside. Here is a pictorial recap of the beauty that was One Minute South:

A day in paris

View of the Iffel tower
I know I've been somewhat of a stranger lately, always neglecting this blog *sigh* but I'm back. Its been crazy these past couple of weeks. I changed Jobs and as such I've been AWOL trying to get into my new schedule and settling in at my new job. New exciting things ahead. Anyhow, I promised I'd start sharing from my travel experiences and this post is one of those.  Oh Paris, what can I say and where do we start......

I have always wanted to go to Paris ever since I was a little girl hearing stories about it from dad. Something about his recollection of his time there made it one of my top 5 destinations to visit before I die. My top 5 include: New York, Amsterdam, Paris, Capetown, Venice. Out of these five, I've been to four and now I'm left with Venice. The city on water.....

Anyway back to Paris the city of love. So I eventually got the opportunity to embark on my Euro trip, late last year and it was life changing. My first stop was Amsterdam which I will write about later, and then my next stop was to Paris. I chose to take  a train from Amsterdam to Paris (4 hrs) because i really wanted to experience the country side and see what scenery it has to offer. Best decision ever!!!  I arrived at the Paris Du Nord Train station at about midday and my friend was waiting to pick me up. We went straight to the hotel to drop off my stuff and embark on the adventure. We couldn't check in to the hotel before midday but they were kind enough to keep my bags in storage till later. My hotel was right next to a couple of Cafe's and What better way to start the Paris experience than in a cafe munching on some Nutella crepes. After a light snack, I embarked on my adventures to discover and experience Paris in a day. Since my hotel was right next to the Louvre, We walked to the Musée du Louvre on Rue de Rivoli. For those who don't know, this is the museum that houses the Legendary Monalisa painting..... That's a story for another day though. After a tour of the museum, and actually getting to see (not touch) the Monalisa (I'll explain another time) I was off to the tour d'eiffel, also known as the Iffel tower. It is the most grande and picturesque tower you will ever see. Once I was done with taking pictures of the tower, I  hoped on the tour bus and headed straight to the Seine bridge where I crossed over to the  Musée d'orsey and after a long tour of this museum, I crossed over the bridge to and headed to the Notre Dame. I was able to do most of the activities on my my to checklist except go to the Moulin Rouge. But no worries, that will be for next time. I must say, there really is something in the air or Paris that just makes you fall in love; the food, the people, the language, the romantic music on the streets, its something else. Everything is romantic. Paris really did steal my heart and I hope to one day return and continue my adventures. Now take a sneak peek into the pictorials of  my Day in Paris Adventure below:

Travel Tips from this trip
  1. Take the train to travel to Paris if you're within Europe, Its cheaper and much more fun.
  2. Its cold Between November to March so carry warm clothing
  3. Buy the tickets for both train and entry to museums earlier online ( makes it even more cheap and faster to get around)
  4. Book the hotel online, its cheaper. (I used Hotels.com)
  5. Paris Must see sites: Notre Dame, The Louvre, The eiffel tower, Musee D'orsay, Seine bridge and the Moulin Rouge.
  6. While inside the Musee du Louvre, do endeavor to search for and find the Monalisa.

Happy travels

About the Yoga

Back Bend Vinyasa helps with Spinal Alignment
and increases blood flow around the spine and diaphragm

About over a year ago I made a drastic move to change my life. I didn’t know then how deep the journey to self-discovery and transformation would get me. I didn’t even know what I wanted to change about my life. I just knew that something needed to change. As I embarked on this journey of transformation I decided I would start by doing stuff I had never done before.

Yoga, was my first go to. I started reading up on yoga and doing as much research as I could about it, because I’m a planner. I like to always know what I’m getting into so that I can be prepared for the outcome. Or so I tend to think. So I read up as much as I could and I started ‘practicing’ meditation yoga. It didn’t work because there was so much clutter running through my mind.

A little background, I am a paranoid person. I also tend to suffer from anxiety and so I dramatize everything. So imagine me trying to not think about anything; impossible! Or so I thought. Since meditation yoga wasn’t working or making me feel better about myself, I embarked on workout Yoga (acrovinyasa to be exact). My life has never been the same.

What started out as a hobby, has now become a lifestyle. The thing about Work out Yoga is that you work out both the mind and the Body. It requires so much concentration and dedication and control of breathing that when the session is done, you’re worn out and refreshed at the same time. The body feels really tired but the mind feels at ease. There is something about the deep breaths during the work out that seem to still the mind and help you focus on what you’re trying to achieve. Whether it be a back-bend that you’re trying to get right or telling your mind that you feel strong and motivated.

The beginning of something new is always exciting and yoga was the same, until it wasn’t. I was finding it hard to do some twists and so I gave up for a bit because I felt like there was no point bothering myself with yoga if I’d never get to master them. But you have to be patient.

Yoga Lesson number 1. After a few weeks of giving up, I realized that being a quitter made me feel even worse about myself than struggling to get the moves right. So I decided to give it another try. But first, I had to change my mentality. With anything in life, if you believe you can, then you will. And if you believe you can’t you most probably won’t be able to do it.

Yoga lesson number 2. The first time I told myself that if other yoginis could do it, then so could I, and promised myself not to end that session without completing the back bend, I kid you not; I did that back bend. I struggled with it in the beginning of the session but I was determined to get it done one way or another and so  then I started telling my mind not to give up on me and to keep going, pushing myself up stronger and before I knew it, I pushed myself up and into a back-bend I went. Don’t give up.

Yoga Lesson number 3.
My journey of self-rediscovery, growth and transformation has been much more profound than I ever could have imagined. I am loving the small milestones, the obstacles and my ability to overcome them and I am delighted that now I get to share them with the world through this blog. The fourth and last lesson that practicing yoga has taught me is resilience. Allowing my body to adjust to the different movements has ultimately taught me to allow myself to adjust to the changes in my life and better accept them. I now fully understand that flexibility of the mind can tame flexibility of the body. If you learn to be patient with yourself, and control your thoughts, you will ultimately begin to control your destiny. Let’s talk more about that soon.

Murchison Falls, What a Beauty

Yes, I know it has been a while and I do apologize for disappearing. I have been Busy with life. It really has been a crazy couple of months. Lots of lessons and experiences to share. I have been out there experiencing what the world has to offer and although this post comes a few months late, I'm finally in a position where I can sit and reflect on what I've been up to.

I know I usually just write thoughts on this blog but I thought It was time we switched things up a notch. So from now on, I will not only be writing my thoughts but I will also be sharing my experiences through travel, food, fashion and everything Lifestyle. I hope you enjoy the new theme of the blog. Lets start this off with my visit to the Murchison falls.
I got a chance to travel and visit the Murchison/ Kabalega Falls during the Uganda travel month that was organised by The Pearl Guide Uganda. I must say we had an amazing time exploring the wild and camping at Nile Safari Lodge. I will be sharing Pictures of the falls as well as the adventures we got up to while there.

First off, what is Murchison falls? For those of you who don't know; Murchison Falls, also known as Kabalega Falls, is a waterfall between Lake Kyoga and Lake Albert on the White Nile River in UgandaSir Samuel and Florence Baker were the first Europeans to find them. Baker named them after Sir Roderick Murchison, president of the Royal Geographical SocietyDuring the regime of Idi Amin in the 1970s the name was changed to Kabarega Falls, after the Omukama (King) Kabarega of Bunyoro, although this was never legally promulgated. The name reverted to Murchison Falls following the downfall of Idi Amin. It is still sometimes referred to as Kabarega Falls. Now that we know the brief History about Murchison falls, Here is a pictorial of my visit to the beautiful Falls.
